  • Arbitrum One network experienced major outage on December 15th, with block production stalling for over 2 hours and halting transactions
  • Outage occurred during surge in network activity, causing congestion; exact cause not confirmed but speculated to relate to NFT minting or a technical issue
  • Incident caused significant delays and failed transactions; underscores relative immaturity of Arbitrum uptime vs Ethereum, may spur further decentralization of architecture

The Arbitrum One network, a prominent Ethereum layer-2 scaling solution, encountered an unexpected disruption. This interruption, which lasted for more than two hours, resulted in a significant halt in the network’s block production, effectively freezing transactions.

The Arbitrum One Sequencer stalled at 10:29 AM ET during a significant surge in network traffic.

We are working to resolve as quickly as possible and will provide a post-mortem as soon as possible.

Sequencer Malfunction Leads to Production Standstill

The issue began at 10:29 am ET (13:29 UTC), with the Arbitrum One sequencer ceasing to produce new blocks, as reported by the network’s status page. The sudden stoppage occurred amidst a spike in network activities, leading to severe congestion. Though some blocks were intermittently produced, they contained only a handful of transactions.

Community Debates Potential Causes

In the wake of the outage, members of the Arbitrum community took to social media to speculate about possible causes. A prevalent theory pointed to an overwhelming number of NFT minting transactions, which might have led to the limited transaction capacity per block. However, the Arbitrum team has not confirmed these speculations. Other theories suggested technical glitches or security breaches, but no concrete information has been provided.

Operational Disruptions Felt Across the Network

The network’s functionality was compromised for at least two hours, disrupting normal operations. Even though regular block production resumed later in the day, the period of inactivity caused notable delays and transaction failures. Analysts are still assessing the full extent of the impact.

Future Measures and Community Response

This event has highlighted the need for improvements in Arbitrum’s infrastructure, particularly concerning its uptime reliability compared to the Ethereum mainnet. In response, developers are considering measures to enhance the decentralization of the network’s architecture. The Arbitrum team is focused on identifying the root cause of the sequencer’s failure to avert similar incidents in the future. While normal operations have resumed, the community remains watchful and cautious.
