  • Tesla filed a lawsuit against the Swedish government after postal workers blocked license plate deliveries for Tesla cars amid an ongoing labor dispute between Tesla and unions.
  • Tesla claims the government has an obligation to provide license plates and the blockade is discriminatory. Tesla wants to collect plates directly now.
  • The dispute escalates tensions as Tesla delivered over 9,000 cars in Sweden last year and the Model Y is currently the top-selling car there.

Tesla has filed a lawsuit against the Swedish government after postal workers began blocking deliveries of license plates for the company’s cars in Sweden. This comes amid an ongoing labor dispute between Tesla and unions representing workers at its service centers in the country.

Background on Labor Dispute

Swedish unions have been pressuring Tesla with strikes and blockades due to Tesla’s refusal so far to sign a collective bargaining agreement with employees in its service division, including technicians and mechanics who repair and maintain customers’ cars. As a show of solidarity, Swedish postal workers recently started blocking Tesla license plate deliveries.

Details of Tesla’s Lawsuit

In the lawsuit filed Monday, Tesla claims the Swedish government has a constitutional obligation to provide registration plates to vehicle owners. Tesla says the seizure of plates by postal workers constitutes “a discriminatory attack” on the company. Tesla is demanding that it should be allowed to collect license plates directly into its possession, rather than receiving them by mail.

Tesla’s Operations in Sweden

According to the lawsuit, Tesla delivered 9,167 cars to Sweden last year. The company says the Model Y is currently the top-selling car in the country in 2023 so far. In Q3 2022, Tesla delivered a total of 435,059 cars globally.

Conclusion

The lawsuit represents an escalation in the ongoing dispute between Tesla and Swedish unions over workers’ rights. The company is seeking an alternative method to distribute license plates as postal workers continue to block deliveries amid the standoff.
