  • Crypto wallet service provider Phantom has introduced a new feature allowing applications to authenticate users using a Solana address.
  • The Sign In With Solana (SIWS) is intended to improve user experience and security.
  • The company collaborated with Solana Labs to ensure compatibility with the Solana Wallet Standard, and the new feature supports standardization across the Solana ecosystem.

On Monday, a Wallet service provider Phantom introduced a new feature allowing applications to authenticate users using a Solana address. The Sign In With Solana (SIWS) is intended to improve the user experience and security by streamlining the traditional “connect” and “sign message” flow into a single-click “SignIn” method.

Today, we’re excited to launch a new feature that lets apps securely authenticate their users with just a Solana address.

This new one-click “signIn” method is designed to improve the user experience and security by replacing the traditional two-step authentication process with a single-click method. Traditionally, users connecting their wallets to major apps would need clarification on signature requests, often leading to poor user experiences. While necessary for authentication, these pop-ups could be daunting for new users and tiring for returning ones.

On the other hand, the one-click sign-in method, available as of Phantom version 23.11, allows Solana developers to prompt users to connect and sign a standardized authentication message and prove ownership of their addresses.

Notably, the sign-in method provides developers with a robust API for creating standardized authentication messages, Phantom said. This shift in responsibility for message construction from applications to the wallet allows Phantom to scrutinize elements such as the site’s domain or the time of message issuance, ensuring legitimacy.

Phantom Collaborates with Solana Labs

Phantom’s SIWS feature supports the “Solana Wallet Standard,” addressing the lack of standardization in the authentication process among apps. The company worked closely with Solana Labs on the launch, ensuring that the sign-in method was fully compatible with the Solana Wallet Standard’s SIWS feature. This collaboration signifies a broader effort to integrate the feature across other wallets in the Solana ecosystem.

Solana developers can now use the new sign-in method on all extension platforms, with mobile support coming soon.

The SIWS feature released by Phantom makes authentication more consistent. It allows the wallet service provider to check for suspicious activity. In some instances, this construction may hinder the progress of malicious actors, potentially preventing breaches like those experienced in the past.

Drawing inspiration from Ethereum’s EIP-4361, the SIWS feature is a Solana-specific innovation tailored to the unique demands of the Solana network.

Furthermore, the feature boasts the versatility to seamlessly integrate with other wallets in the broader Solana ecosystem, contributing to a more interconnected and cohesive digital environment.

Phantom’s new one-click sign-in method significantly advances the crypto and NFT wallet app space. Phantom addresses a major hurdle for new entrants and seasoned users by simplifying the authentication process and enhancing security measures.

It is worth mentioning that Phantom’s launch of the SIWS feature reflects the platform’s aim for innovation and user-centric design. It also underscores the growing collaboration within the Solana ecosystem, setting a precedent for future developments.
